The Benefits of AI

Holahan stressed that AI is not meant to replace human interaction but enhance it. Used appropriately, AI can:

  • Reduce the time nurses and other team members spend on tasks like documenting, analyzing, and communicating data; For example, it can match practitioner notes with MDS data to ensure they align and that information isn’t missing or conflicting Generate results of screenings and tests faster.
  • Quickly identify issues, such as mobility problems, enabling early interventions that can help prevent ED visits and hospitalizations
  • Identify an individual’s risk for complications like heart attack, stroke or falls and predict the timeframe in which the issue is likely to occur
  • Capture key parts of practitioner-patient interactions so the nurse or physician can focus on the person instead of the keyboard
  • Enable prompt responses to some questions or queries from family members or other stakeholders
  • Identify and correct human errors, such as prescribing of medications that can cause dangerous side effects or interactions
  • Generate certain communications like letters, emails, or briefings

“AI can be a tremendous help and make our lives easier, but we need to be careful with how and where we use it”
