When opportunity knocks, open the door. This is an optimistic expression, but it can go the other way. Opportunity can invite temptation; and this exists in healthcare settings, such as long-term care, when it comes to drug diversion.
Consider a study from 2020 that found that 23% of total prescriptions among nursing home residents were opioids. And this study only addressed opioids, not other controlled substances or medications. Add to this data suggesting that about 10% of healthcare staff suffer from drug addiction. The conclusion is that it’s essential to have policies, protocols, procedures and more to prevent diversion and address it promptly when it happens or is suspected.
