As people age, it is not uncommon that they take multiple medications, and adherence can become more complicated. Not only do complex medication regimens present a challenge to adherence, but so do cognitive impairment and memory issues, financial constraints, and physical/mobility limitations. The consequences of non-adherence can be significant and include poor clinical outcomes, costs associated with related emergency department visits and hospitalizations, worsening of existing conditions, and overall increase in morbidity and mortality. The pharmacist is an important partner in improving and maintaining adherence in older adults, including those residing in senior living communities.
